Good morning, fellow parents! Today, I want to share with you the power of joyful reunions and why your greeting matters to your child.
As a clinical psychologist, I see firsthand how small moments in our daily lives can have a huge impact on our children. As a mom of two, I engage with my boys each day with it in mind. One of the most powerful but often overlooked opportunities to connect with your child is during your reunions—whether it’s first thing in the morning, after school, on Facetime (my big guy is away in college), or when you return from a long workday.
It seems so simple but in our rushed lives…
When your child sees you after being apart, your response sends a strong emotional message. Greeting them with joy and delight—whether it’s a warm hug, a kiss on the head, a big smile, or an enthusiastic “I’m so happy to see you!”—helps to foster a sense of security and love. These moments tell your child, “You matter to me!” This message can build their confidence and emotional well-being over time. These reunion behaviors also reinforce your attachment to your child and with your child to you.
It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of the day and forget to make these reunions special. But remember, the simple act of showing happiness in these moments is not just about the present. It’s an investment in your bond with your child, with long-term benefits. It can improve your child’s mood and behavior, because children thrive on feeling valued and seen. And it all starts with how we greet them, even when we are tired in the morning, lol.
So next time you see your child after being apart, remember that even the smallest effort can make a big difference. Take a deep breath, set aside distractions, and let your face light up with joy. You’ll be amazed at how much this small, consistent act of connection can mean to them—and to you!
xoxo,
